Here and now

In a world where global events ripple through our lives, impacting millions and creating waves of uncertainty, the ability to be truly present is becoming an ever more essential skill of resilience. The consequences of these developments can touch any of us at any moment, making it all the more important to find grounding in the here and now.
This morning, during a sunny tai chi class in the park, 'presence' was palpable. Parents with young children gathered around a small pool, where the kids could cool off. Nearby, a group was giving an in-line skating class to kids, and a pianist was rehearsing for the afternoon's free concert at the elevated summer house. The air was filled with chatter, laughter, and the occasional clumsy move or fall. Our tai chi master wisely noted, "Learning to fall and get back up is one of the most important skills in life; you can never learn it early enough."
An ice-cream vendor pedaled by on his bike, while people jogged, worked out, walked, biked, or simply sat on the edge of flower beds to soak up the sun. Ducks, ducklings, herons, pigeons, green ring-necked parakeets, and crows added to the lively scene, with probably some rodents hiding in the bushes. Young and old, people from all walks of life and cultures, were present in this shared space. Our group, meanwhile, breathed gently in and out, making slow, steady movements. We were in the present, almost oblivious to the buzz around us.
In that same moment, elsewhere in the world, children were asking their parents for food, people were hurting from loss and craving safety and a more predictable tomorrow. Others were enjoying a leisurely day by the pool, sipping exquisite cocktails, riding their horse, playing golf of taking a plunge from the deck of their yacht. The contrast is stark, yet it underscores the importance of presence. Being mentally and physically present where we are allows us to find peace and resilience amidst the chaos.
Presence is not about ignoring the world's troubles but about finding a moment of calm within ourselves. It is about acknowledging the beauty and simplicity of the 'now', despite all injustice and pain around. Breathe in to your core, allow some tension to release. Feel the connection to the ground. Being present is not 'inaction', it's the precondition for thoughtful action for the benefit of all in the long-term. Presence is the breeding ground of actions that will help get out of the difficult times we are in. It opens us up to genuine co-creation, to win-win thinking, for collective solutions.
Whether you are practicing tai chi in the park, enjoying a quiet moment at home, or navigating the challenges of daily life, you can always allow yourself to be present. No matter what the world throws at you. Focus on what is in your sphere of control. Understanding that we always have a choice. Kindness, connection to one another is always an option. Breathing in and out. This connects us to all humanity. To entire community of life.
